I have a 2002 Ram 1500 Quad Cab w/ 6' bed. Truck's 5.9L / 170K miles - runs fine around town, but after driving some distance, and ambient temps rise, I will climb a grade, accelerate to pass and find that the truck starves itself for fuel and falls flat forcing me to move back to the right lane. As the grade proceeds I watch engine temps rise dramamtically. After the grade ends (or I park it temporarily) and the cool down begins, i regain use of the throttle.
Some have suggested vapor lock, as the fuel turns to vapor crossing the engine. I have heard my fuel pump "whirring" at idle, and that isn't normal, is it? So, with 170k miles on it, I believe my fuel pump is going out and thus loosing pressure as the engine heats up. I want to change it out myself before it goes out and strands me somewhere. Anyone have helpful ideas? Thanks!
