just came back from a huge trip across canada, hauled an average of 3800 pounds and i have a 2006 1500 mega cab. I was ready for bad mileage since i had a diesel previously, but i was somewhat impressed. I got 12 mpg no matter what, from eastern ontario ( which is comparable to northern new york) all the way to British columbia interior ( comparable to washington state). I barely used cruise control which is where i got better mileage in the prairies ( no hills ).
what I learned though is " tow-haul" options should be tured off once cruising at 60 miles/hr or 100km. I would start with it , then turn it off. Folks who read this realize that i really didn't travel at 60 mph, but did 70 or 110-120km.
I basically gunned it. I'm very happy for the power to pass on hills, and those are rocky mountain hills, and never really seen the MPG dropped under 12mpg . The only time i saw it drop to 10mpg was when i decided to do 160km/hr or 85-90mph in the prairies.
i am impressed with the power return. I did own a dodge diesel before, and th only difference i noticed is the bad mpg return but did notice that the hemi will respond immediatley to your throtte demand,,,so basically who cares about mpg.
i broke my trip down into segments, from prairie driving and mountain driving,,,and 4x4 into the old logging roads,,,i am very impressed with the 1500 mega cab.
