My '07 2WD has developed a soft howling sound from the rear axle under constant or acceleration it stops when I let off the throttle. The truck has 42K on it. I have searched for other posts for this but did not find any.
Is this a 'known' weakness? Is is the diff telling me it is done? What is the popular fix?
Thanks

Well, I can't speak for what exactly it is on your '07, but the '01 Ram Sport I had a few years back had a howl under acceleration (and under cruising/coasting conditions, but harder to hear) and it turned out to be the ring and pinion gears failing - by the time I was able to get it to a shop, the pinion gear actually broke a few teeth off.

My rear diff makes a soft swoosh noise under accel or constant pedal but if I lift it stops. I asked a mechanic and he said it was just the gears moving through the fluid. But its not a howl, I hope you get it figured out...
