I just recently bought a 2004 Ram 2500HD with a Cummings HO Turbo Diesel engine. It is the first diesel truck that I myself have ever bought. Does this type of engine work well with the newer ultra low sulfur diesel or should I get some other type of lubricant to go along with it?

as you allready know the sulfur is for lubrication. even though newer diesels are supposedly designed to require less lubricant its a good idea to run an additive. and a must for older diesels that are now running low sulfer fuel. some of these additives also claim a mpg increase. just make shure the one you use has some additive for lubrication.

any suggestions on which type of additive would work best to improve the life span of the engine? or simply the performance?

use a addative/conditioner with added sulfur or something else in it for lubrication of the fuel system.i use the stuff from my local jd dealer cause its convienent. its called fuel system conditioner.there are many brands out there at your local parts house. if you want added mpg and performance there are also addatives/conditioners that have cetane added and claim mpgs and hp increases. i dont think you can go wrong as far as brands just check the contents. you should also be able to find an on the shelf addative/conditioner that has both.

Here is a fuel additive test that should give you some insight on different fuel additives. I have used the Opti-Lube XPD since my truck was new.
