I have an 2002 Dodge Ram 2500 cummins diesel and sometimes when I am going down the road it's like the engine loses power. Usually after a minute or two I get power back. I can press the accelerator all the way down and it will downshift but without much power. Is this because of a faulty accelerator sensor?

Any Check Engine light??? If so is there a Timing failure or Engine Crank Sensor does not agree with injectoir pump crank sensor code???

Does the engine die or just lose power. Something in the fuel?

It just loses power.....then eventually it will come back to normal. I did some more checking and I am getting the code P0216 which is the most common code that indicates to replace the injection pump. But, there was also the statement along with the code that said: Injector/injection timing control circuit. I am wondering if it is an electrical problem with the injection pump circuit. Also, the controller addresses were from the responding code 21...I wonder what that is.

No check engine light. It shows on an OBDcom unit a code of P0216 and the statement: Injector/injection timing control circuit. Also, the controller addresses responding to the code is 21....whatever that is.

P0216- Fuel Injection Pump Timing Failure... that COULD mean a bad injector pump, a long time ago, I had a 2002 that kept setting this code. It would lose power just as you described. I did a transfer pump, 2 injector pumps, and an ECM. None of this fixed it. STAR was insistent that it was a injector pump gear keway issue, which it wasn't. My service manager got involved, and was thinking maybe the cam sensor wasn't working right, even though it was still reading right. We replaced it as a shot in the dark, and the truck was fixed. It's located under the injector pump, held by an allen screw, you need a long screwdriver to get the screw out, then reach under the pump and pull it out. Only hard part is the screw.

Part # 05080577AB, $93.95 list, dealer is free to set price, may be lower. I'd try this first before waisting money on a lift pump (usually is an overlay kit to install an in tank pump in place of the block mounted one, around $545 list) or a reman injector pump to the tune of $1,785-2,110 list!!!

Tbird100636 you are the man! Thanks a bunch for the info. I'm gonna order a service manual so I can read a bit more on the cam sensor. I did have the transfer pump changed last fall but that didn't fix the problem....I had an intank pump put in. What you advise sounds like the thing to do next. Thanks again..Trucker53.

Well, I made a trip into town today and got my camshaft sensor in the mail. I installed it with the help of my brother and drove it about 25 miles back home. So far it seems to have fixed the problem. I'll be driving it back to town in a few days and so we'll see how it does then. Anyway, I really appreciate this forum and all who help with it. Thanks, Trucker53

I drove the truck to town and back yesterday....about 50 miles, and found that the truck is still doing the same as it did. The camshaft sensor didn't do the trick. So, I guess the next step is to change the injection pump. I still wonder if it is an electrical problem and not the injection pump itself....maybe in the pump computer. It's all speculation but I guess we'll see. Frustrated Trucker53

I changed the injection pump a couple days ago and drove it about 30 miles since. It appears to be working just fine now. Hopefully it is fixed.....I'll write another note after I drive the truck a bit more. Anyway, thanks for your help. Trucker53

Changing the fuel injection pump fixed the problem. The truck is running like a champ with proper acceleration and response to the thottle pedal. Yay!!

Good to here you got it fixed (though an expensive fix in the end). Come back soon, we need to get this place hopping like LXForums!!! (an affiliate of this forum)
