Hello, everyone I am new to this forum. I joined because I am giving serious consideration to buying a Ram 1500 with the 5.7. According to the window sticker it gets 15 city and 20 hi way. The salesman told me its because when your on the hi way and you put it on cruise control it shuts off 4 cylinders and thats how it makes 20 mpg on the hi way. I drive about 60 miles a day roundtrip for work and even though I have a lead foot can make it there and back on cruise control with out lead footing it. I will save all my lead foot driving for afterwork. My question is has anyone actually achieved 20 mpg with a 5.7 ? Please let me know. Thanks David

I have a 2010 4x2 Big Horn with the 5.7 and I drive 38.5 miles roundtrip each day. 32 of those miles are expressway and I typically drive 70 mph, no traffic, with the cruise on. When I am on flat areas of the expressway and the MDS kicks in, the mpg will go to 20, maybe a little more. But when you hit the hilly areas, and the MDS turns off, it gets around 16 or less, depending on the grade of the hill.
Assuming your travels are on flat, non-hilly terrain, yes, you will get around 20 mpg. But, the slightest incline will turn off MDS, and your mileage will take a hit. Don't expect to get 20 mpg as an average per tank. Probably more in the 16-17 range, depending on how much city driving you do.

Thanks for the advice. Most of my trip to work is on the freeway but, its up and down several hills. I would love to have the horsepower but, the way I drive I would be lucky to get 13 or 14. Guess I need to think about it some more. Thanks again David

You don't need to turn the cruise on for the MDS to work, but it does help hold you at a consistent speed.

Mine is a 2010 5.7 Quad Cab 4X4, on this last trip running the hills of Pa on route 15 I got 16-18 mpg. That was using the cruise and letting the MDS kick in whenever it could. Depending on the posted limit I was running 65-75 mph. I generally run 9-10 over. On the level my MDS does not seem to run much at all below about 67 mph. I suspect the 2WD might activate a bit higher than that but don't know??
I just got the 2010 5.7 crew cab last weekend and checked the mileage. I am getting around 22 highway and 15 around town. I based this on 2 fillups in 2 days. Absolutely love the truck thought...go for it.....

We just got our 2010 5.7 Ram. Haven't check the mileage yet, but it will be alright. Good luck with your decision. :)

Off topic but a HEMI uses 5W20 oil, not 5W30. You will most likely have the Check Engine light come on as a result.

Mine is a 2010 1500 QC 4X4 Hemi with 20" wheels and 392 rears and I just filled up for the second time today. By hand calculating both tanks I am getting around 14.5 around town with normal every day driving. My driving is a mix of hilly, twisty, and a small amount of highway driving.

I just bought a new Ram 1500 4X4 with the Hemi. My first trip into the City of Houston was today, 100 mile round trip, got 18.1 MPG at both highway 70 to 75 and City driving also at 10 to 40 miles per hour. I was impressed.

I have used 5w30wt oil in my Hemi befor and it was fine.. I use the 5w20 wt now cause it is recommended. the 5w20wt oil from what I have read on the Amsoil page is only for better fuel mileage, due to Gov't rules, regulations.

I have a 2010 1500 QC 4X4 w/3.92 gears and 20" wheels also. I just took a 600 mile trip pulling my double jetski trailer and a load of eqpt in the bed and got 16 mpg. I am tickled pink with that!
BTW, I changed to Castrol Edge 5w/30 because of the Texas heat for a little extra protection.

Just got mine a month ago :D and will be going synthetic as it does protect in heat and stays liquid here in the in Canadian:eek: Winters at first oil change.
One thing though it will not be Castrol. You may not be aware of fact that BP:mad::mad:, Yes the same people who knew there was a flaw in rig that blew up and that has caused the planets worst oil spill disaster make Castrol.

I will be certain the fluids that I use are from USA or Canada owned companies from now on.

Im not so worried about gas milage when im driving around town, is there a way to turn off the MSD cylinder de-activation on my 2010 5.7 hemi sport. I want to put on a magnaflow cat back exhoust but i was told it sound horrible when the MSD is turning off cylinders.

You must install the N.I.K.E device :p first to your left foot then from drivers seat start the engine, slowly back out driveway:rolleyes: put truck in drive ensuring that there are no obstacles directly in front (checking rear optional if you live on gravel road) and activate MASH initiation manoeuver of the N.I.K.E device to the floor. Maximum benefit of Magnaflow music will be instantaneous (wife will do the S.L.A.P technique to side of your head seeing gas gauge moving quicker than speedo) and will sound good. Seriously I heard a 2010 Hemi with Magnaflow, rumble in ECO mode is not that bad.
