View Full Version : Do you guys use high octane/the expensive fuel on your trucks?
I know the trucks have the sensor in them to protect the over/mis-firing in the cylinders, but I still hear Ram owners talk about using high octane gas in their trucks. Is it worth it?

I always use 93octane in mine because I have a Superchips set to performance. When I had my 05 before I got the tuner, I could tell a difference in performance between running 87octane and 89 octane. Ma Mopar recommends 89octane for all of the Hemi's. I definitely think it's worth it. It's only a couple bucks more per fillup anyway.

Get a tuner and download a premium gas tune, you won't be disapointed. You might get 1 more mpg and better throttle response. Also a set of headers and a good cold air intake. Modding these trucks is very addictive! If your interested in a tuner, PM me. I have a Hyperpac tuner. It did a good job, but I'm going to do heads and a cam pretty soon and I'm getting the Diablo Predator so I can have it CMR tuned.

My truck runs considerably better on 93 octane then 89. So yes I do run it and recommend it to anyone with a hemi. Unless you have a predator or something and run its 87 octane tune. On a full tank of gas all highway I got .8 mpg better with 93 than 87 same MPH and everything.

Over the last 3000 miles on my 08 hemi total stock I've tried every octane of gas, and seen no discernable difference in MPG. Mopar allows 87, recommends 89. If towing or modding use higher, obviously. Driving it like a regular car, 87 is fine.

the reason for the higher octane fuel in the hemi is for high rpm detonation....havnt heard of this happening. im not worried bout the extra 6 to 10 pennies per gal it costs to run what ma mopar recomends...plus i have a heavy foot..

I just got a 10 Hemi sport. it has 756km on it.
Just took a trip to the lake for the long weekend set the cruz on 105km and got 11.3 liters per 100 km on the dash computer. Thats with my wife 2 little boys and an arm load of camping junk.....
Talk about being impressed. Im one excited first time RAM truck owner.
and I always use 93 octane Shell V power.
I believe it helps with better fuel economy, better starting and cleaner engine. I hear people say that they run 93 high octane in there truck every 4th tank to keep the engine cleaner. I just do it all the time. I just filled up today 84ltrs. @ 1.099/ltr. = $92.47 with regular sitting at .979 thats $10 more.

higher octane fuel does not burn any hotter or cleaner than lower grade. the only reason for the octane raise is to prevent detonation in a higher compression engine. detonation or spark knock can be simpily described as fuel igniton under pressure (not from spark).

I have a Super Chip and for a while I had it set at the 87 octane setting. Recently I changed it to the High Octane setting. I run 91. I can't find 93 here where I live. I get a little better mileage at with the higher octane setting. But it of coarse cost more per gallon. So I think thats a wash. But the truck also performs a little better now.
