Hi guys, This is my first time here, Here is my question. I am trying to rebuild the trans. out of my '94 ram 4x4 and the front clutch only has 3 discs and 3 plates but the book and everything I've seen online says there should be 4, my kit came with 4 but if I put them all in it covers up the groove for the wavy ring. I thought mabye the piston wasn't going down all the way so I took the seals off and tried it again, only 3 will fit. Is this normal? The truck was running and driving so I'm kinda stumped. any info would be appreciated. I will probably be posting more here throughout this process. Thanks guys.

Here's the diagram, three clutch discs, three steels, and a reaction plate. 42RH uses 4 discs and steels.

Here's the directions:
ASSEMBLE

Soak clutch discs in transmission fluid.
Install new inner and outer seals on clutch piston. Be sure seal lips face interior of retainer.
Lubricate new inner and outer piston seals with Ru-Glyde, or Mopar Door Ease.
Install clutch piston in retainer. Use twisting motion to seat piston in bottom of retainer. A thin strip of plastic (about 0.015 - 0.020 in. thick), can be used to guide seals into place if necessary. CAUTION: Never push the clutch piston straight in. This will fold the seals over causing leakage and clutch slip. In addition, never use any type of metal tool to help ease the piston seals into place. Metal tools will cut, shave, or score the seals.
Install and position nine clutch piston springs

Install spring retainer on top of piston springs.
Compress spring retainer and piston springs with Tool C-3863-A.
Install spring retainer snap ring and remove compressor tool.
Install clutch plates and discs Three clutch discs, three steel plates and one reaction plate are required.
Install reaction plate followed by waved snap ring.
Check clutch pack clearance with feeler gauge Clearance between waved spring and pressure plate should 1.78 - 3.28 mm (0.070 - 0.129 in.) If clearance is incorrect, clutch plates, clutch discs, snap ring, or pressure plate may have to be changed.

thanks for the drawing, I will have to bring home some feeler gauges and check clearance but it looks about right. thanks again
