Hi folks, after 11 years of working at the plant that makes the stamped/welded metal dash assemblys T-300, BR 98, and DR, I have finally purchased my first fullsize Dodge Ram 4x4. I bought it used from someone who got it at an auction, its a 2001 2500 4x4 club cab long bed with the 8.0 V-10.

I bought it yesterday about 90 miles from where I live, I test drove the truck around 5 or 6 miles and fell in love with it, It shifted fine. I drove it home over hills and alot of stop and go, no problems.

I drive over to my nephews house and the tranny slipped and shuttered a little when I pulled out of his drive way. I pulled over about 1/8th of a mile down the road and checked tranny fluid in neutral and it was ok, shrugged shoulders, got back into truck and no reverse, had forward gears but still slipped a little, drove on home about 6 miles and it slipped only when I had to stop or slow way down for a turn.

Once home Im scratching my head figuring Ill have to get the tranny rebuilt, I go outside and try to move the truck and no forward gears, BUT!!!!! reverse engages fine now with no slipping???

I tried it again this morning hoping it would fix itself (LOL) same thing, no forward,,, just reverse.

From what I have read it has the 47re trans, is this an exspensive transmission to have rebuilt?

P.S. When I put it in drive, and give a little gas, it does seem like it wants to move ever so slightly, maybe an inch or so.

The truck does have 231000 miles on it,

, I know I will probably have to replace the tranny, but I spent all the available cash I had to buy the truck so getting a tranny right away isnt really an option.

Any insight would be appreciated

Thanks

Let's see, you checked the fluid... have you tried manual low or manual second??? Is the kickdown lever moving freely??? Is the shift linkage adjusted properly??? It's essentially leading to an overhaul or replacement of the unit otherwise. To test pump flow, take the rear cooler line off, attach a heater hose to the end and put the hose in a empty ground coffee can. Have someone just start the vehicle while you hold the can. The can will not fill up and will only trickle out of the rear line if there's a problem. (normally should fill the can within 15 seconds).

I have done all the above except the fluid coffee can test, I had already removed the pan and filter looking for any obvious mechanical problems and didnt see anything that looked suspicous around the valve body, The magnet in the pan was covered with the usual dark sludge, and the pan had some coating the bottom, so Im gonna go ahead and take it to a trans shop and have it rebuilt.

Over the phone the trans shop said depending on damage, they could rebuild it for $1200 to $1500, with a 1 year warranty.

Does that price sound about right for this type of trans?

BTW, Thanks for replying to my post TBIRD.

Cheers Danny:)
